Located at the base of Mount Asama, Japan’s most active volcanoes, Karuizawa is a well-known resort town in Nagano. In the fall of 2021, I left my job in Tokyo and moved to Karuizawa for several weeks before returning to Europe. Since I first came to Japan, I had wondered what it would be like to create a life in the countryside there, in the inaka. As the moment to leave came closer, these last weeks were the conclusion to an idyll with a beautiful country that deeply marked the first part of my 20s.
