<p>An Eagle Scout and athlete, Anderson attended Washington Elementary School and East Topeka Junior High School before graduating with honors from Topeka High School in 1961. He entered the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point, New York. In 1961, the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, had only a small number of African American cadets. The military academy had a long history of racial segregation and discrimination, and opportunities for African Americans to attend West Point were limited. Despite facing significant challenges and obstacles, the few African American cadets at West Point in 1961 were trailblazers and pioneers in breaking down barriers to integration in the military.
