In any event, there was severe flooding in Brooklyn about two weeks prior to our scheduled arrival. When I checked in with our home exchange partner, she advised me that her basement had flooded, resulting in the loss of her water heater.

We were obliged to make other plans, about a week in advance of our arrival. If you have ever searched for a five-night stay in NYC, you could see for yourself that it can be quite expensive. The most reasonable last-minute pricing we could find was in an east-facing highrise on the opposite side of the Hudson River, in Jersey City, New Jersey.
