Interacting with people? Nah thanks!

Carl Jung coined the term ‘introvert’ to describe people like me. The ones who focus all their energy on the inside world, and avoid social interactions.

Many people are naive enough to assume that introversion is a reflection of a lack of solid personality. It couldn’t be further from the truth. Introverts have a universe inside their mind. There is an old African proverb which says, “Fear a silent man. He has lips like a drum”. The ability to ignore the chatter of the external world, like swallowing a pea and passing it undigested through one’s bowels, is a talent of its own. To listen, is to perform fine art. To blabber, is to waste away.

Not to say that charismatic and outgoing personalities do not exist. Carl Jung saw people as two extremes. Extroversion and introversion — the two absolutes, the blacks and whites. However, if you rummage through your memory lane, you can of course find people who lie somewhere between, as if on a spectrum of sociability. No wonder. There are no blacks and whites in real life. It’s always shades of gray.

Website
