Athens, Greece, the birthplace of democracy, the freddo espresso, and saganaki cheese (all that is good in this world), is also said to be the motherland of graffiti. The origin of the word graffiti is derived from Greek “graphein,” meaning “to write,” “draw,” or “scratch.” But moreover, the practice, as we know it today; to take to the streets to paint or tag, allegedly started with a Greek national in the US whose practice caught on and then made its way back to the homeland. The accuracy of this tale, I wasn’t able to validate, but it makes for a good story, and with Athens density of street art — floor to ceiling, wall to wall — you feel that this must be the source.
