<p><strong>A</strong>thens, Greece, the birthplace of democracy, the freddo espresso, and saganaki cheese (all that is good in this world), is also said to be the motherland of graffiti.</p> <p>The origin of the word graffiti is derived from Greek &ldquo;graphein,&rdquo; meaning &ldquo;to write,&rdquo; &ldquo;draw,&rdquo; or &ldquo;scratch.&rdquo; But moreover, the practice, as we know it today; to take to the streets to paint or tag, allegedly started with a Greek national in the US whose practice caught on and then made its way back to the homeland.</p> <p>The accuracy of this tale, I wasn&rsquo;t able to validate, but it makes for a good story, and with Athens density of street art &mdash; floor to ceiling, wall to wall &mdash; you feel that this must be the source.</p> <p>In 2017, I had the pleasure of calling this ancient city home; soaking in the sunshine, the food and, of course, the art!
