The place was heaving, so I returned the next day for a look.

The India Gate (इंडिया गेट) was originally called the War Memorial Arch but became known locally as the India Gate (इंडिया गेट). The gate was built to honour the Indian soldiers killed in the First World War. The gate bears the names of over 12,000 Indian and around 1,300 British soldiers who died during the First World War on the North West Frontier and in the Third Afghan War in 1919. An additional 3,000 British soldiers who died in garrison stations in India during the period are commemorated on memorials in the war cemeteries at Madras, Kirkee and Delhi.
