Creating A Back 3 In Possession

This is most commonly seen via the full backs. For my tactical blogging I look to stretch the norm and try and find new ways of carrying out concepts in the game. With that being said, we will also look at an asymmetric back four with the use of asymmetric central defenders.

First The Full Backs

When a team uses asymmetric full backs this is often down to the qualities of the players. Typically one player has qualities that illicit more vertical and progressive movements whereas the other is more comfortable in possession and has a better range of passing. When City play Laporte as a left sided full back this is a good example when Walker is on the opposite side. Clearly Walker and his pace is more dangerous going forward where Laporte and his left foot is better utilized in the first line.
