iPad Kids — The Impending Crisis of Gen Alpha and What we Can Do To Help

This is probably one of the more saturated topics I’ve discussed on Medium, but as an observer from a younger generation, I can’t help but worry about the negative impacts the “iPad kid” trend has been having on the younger generations.

For those who are uninformed, the “iPad kid” is a term that’s used to describe kids whose parents allow them to spend extended periods of time each day on an iPad to keep their children distracted and occupied. Back in 2017, a Common Sense Media analytical study was conducted, finding a whopping 80% of participants had kids that were given regular access to some sort of tablet. This trend comes as more millennials are becoming parents, though as a younger adult myself, I wouldn’t necessarily say all the blame lies with millennials, as I’ve noticed similar patterns in some older generations not giving enough care for screen time monitoring. This mainly has more to do with screen time monitoring and entertainment-life balance than chronic addictions. However, the idea of shoving an iPad in a kid’s face to shut them up takes the idea of screen and internet addiction in early adolescence to a crazy extreme.
