The illustrious unknown illustrator

In the 1960s, the renowned publishing house Fabril launched Los Libros del Mirasol—Sunflower Books Collection, a popular collection of world literature that nurtured the libraries of the middle class. The 103 book covers designed by Juan Ángel Cotta for this collection between 1960 and 1962 are true gems of their kind–refined geometries, expressionist miniatures. Cotta was long forgotten until graphic designer Francisco Roca and illustrator Leandro Castelao undertook the task of searching and recovering his dispersed cover art, assembling and presenting it as a whole body of work in a new book: Cotta & Los Libros del Mirasol. Prefaced by Steven Heller, the book has just been published by Flecha Books–a brand-new publisher that aims to recuperate submerged or overlooked graphic heritage.
