How to Be a Data Science Instructor with an Engineering Degree?

1. What led to this article?

I have answered hundreds of questions from students over the past 2 years in my teaching role. It certainly requires a thorough understanding of the subject matter to live up to the intellectual curiosity of Masters students — these are highly intelligent people from the public and private sector (some even holding management positions while studying part-time) and who have access to the vast amount of materials provided by the university as well as the internet.

My students and me. Faces are super-imposed with smiley faces not to hide frowns, but to protect everyone’s privacy!

The students have asked questions from many different angles, some of which I’ve never thought of before. It always gives me satisfaction to see that I can clear the students’ doubts; seeing their ‘I-get-it-now’ reactions and knowing I helped them link the information together and saved them a night of head-scratching. I figured, what better way to multiply my impact, than to write articles that can be accessed by people all around the world!

To start off my journey in Medium, I will write a post on something which many students and even relatives have asked me: “How did I end up teaching data science when I had majored in Engineering?”

I will first tell my ‘story’, and finally summarise the key points at the end. I will seek to add a personal touch, and make it nicer than simply looking up my LinkedIn profile. However, if you only have a minute and want the answers directly, please go straight to the key takeaways in section 3
