How Philosophy Helped Me Understand Myself and Others Better

Have you ever wondered why people are so different from each other? Why do they have different moral judgments and values? Why do they have different habits and preferences? Why do they have different ways of enjoying life?

I have always believed that people choose to be who they are and that everything is under their control, but now I am not so sure. My life’s experience has taught me otherwise. I think people are shaped by their circumstances.

My father used to smoke. My friends smoke and drink. I have always considered those habits bad. But they did not. So, what led to this gap? People’s sense of morality is so different. I think it is shaped by our daily experiences. The concept of enjoyment for many people around me is very different from mine.

To dig into this, I started to study moral philosophy. Moral philosophy is the branch of philosophy that studies what is right and wrong and how we should live our lives in relation to others. I learned that there are different theories and perspectives that try to explain the source and nature of morality, such as divine command theory, natural law theory, social contract theory, utilitarianism, deontology, virtue ethics, etc.

I also learned that there are different challenges and alternatives to these theories, such as determinism vs. free will, moral psychology, moral relativism vs. moral realism, quantum indeterminacy, existentialism, etc.
