How I Nailed the AWS ML Specialty Exam in Just 2 Weeks

The AWS Machine Learning (ML) Specialty exam is often considered one of the most challenging AWS exams. It encompasses a wide range of skills in ML, AWS tools, and services. As a data engineer, I was eager to showcase my proficiency in AWS, machine learning, and data engineering. While there isn’t a dedicated AWS exam specifically for data engineering, several AWS exams cover data engineering topics. So, I decided to embark on the journey to study for and pass the AWS ML Specialty exam with only about 2 weeks to study for it.

Make a Plan and Stick to It

First and foremost, creating a plan and committing to it is key. Just like any other important goal in life, planning and prioritization are essential. Determine how much time you can realistically dedicate each day and block off those time slots in your calendar. Consider maintaining a digital or physical to-do list to track your daily study tasks. Following through with your plan is even more important. Without follow through your plan means nothing. If you struggle with accountability, finding a study partner can be a great idea. I became obsessed with my exam preparation, and for a two-week period, it became my primary focus. This meant letting friends and family know that I might not be as available because I was working diligently toward this goal. I also scheduled focused study blocks and set my cellphone on do not disturb during those periods.

Targeted Studying

Wondering what to study and how to know what’s on the exam? Fortunately, AWS provides a roadmap. The AWS website outlines the exam’s topic areas, which include Data Engineering, Exploratory Data Analysis, Data Modeling, and Machine Learning Implementation and Operations. Contrary to common advice, you shouldn’t attempt to cover all these areas equally. One of the most effective strategies is to take a practice test on the first day of preparation to identify your weak areas and concentrate your efforts on those. AWS offers both a free partial practice test and a paid one. Additionally, many AWS partners provide free or low-cost practice tests. If you consistently score well in a specific domain during practice tests, it makes sense to allocate less time to studying that area. Remember that the exam evolves with changes in AWS machine learning tools and resources, so stay updated by regularly checking the AWS ML blog.
