Greek Traditions: Weddings in Santorini

Santorini is my all-time favorite island in Greece. I have been going there ever since I was a kid. For me, it’s the most romantic place in the world, hands down.

I have attended many weddings in Santorini, and I thought it would be nice to share some related traditions.

For starters, weddings in Santorini always take place on Sundays only. Female friends of the bride gather at the bride’s house on the Thursday-3 days before the wedding — to make sugar plums.

On the day of the wedding, at noon, the father of the groom literally shouts the wedding from the rooftops, as he climbs on a roof to announce the beginning of the wedding to everyone.

After this, violinists go with the bride to every house in Santorini to invite everyone to the wedding, personally. This is my favorite part; it makes everyone feel equally wanted, plus the music is absolutely divine!

Website
