Would the real quantum gravity please stand up?

Quantum gravity research often reminds me of the 1963 classic comedy It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World about a criminal who crashes his car and with his dying breath reveals that he has buried a large sum of money under a big W in a state park to the occupants of four passing cars who stopped to help.

The humor in the story comes from the insanity and mishaps that the four treasure seeking groups experience on the way.

You can see the same humor in quantum gravity research. With their dying breath, those who bequeathed us quantum theory and gave us the most successful physical theory of all time told us that we had to solve this last problem. Since then it has been a mad dash to try to come up with the answer.
