Gratefulness Can Limit Us

<p>In an argument about gender roles my aunt told me that I should count myself lucky because my parents give me greater freedom&nbsp;than&nbsp;most&nbsp;girls&nbsp;receive.</p> <p>Cue exasperated eye-roll. I&rsquo;m 30. Unwed, but/and fucking 30. I do not need to be grateful for the fact that my parents don&rsquo;t feel the need to check up on my whereabouts, nose into my dating life, or &lsquo;allow&rsquo; me to live alone. Yet, my parents &mdash; who treat me like I&rsquo;m an adult human capable of knowing what&rsquo;s best for myself &mdash; are amongst the few in my community who aren&rsquo;t so heavily gendered in their approach to parenting.
