We’ve Gotta Talk (About U)

Well, it’s happening. Saturday brings Mexico City a new TV subchannel — one that happens to be a momentous occasion for the industry.

The logo is different — the blue-and-red U parted by a cross has given way to the glossy blue and orange symbol used elsewhere in Latin America. But Unife, the television channel of the Iglesia Universal del Reino de Dios, is planting its flag on Mexican soil by appearing on XHFAMX-TDT 8.3.

This is technically a lease — the IURD isn’t even the registered channel operator. And that seems to be the correct formula in this country, given that it’s the one that has worked on the radio side. But it is also a milestone, as no TV channel under the control of a religious entity has ever appeared on broadcast airwaves in this country that prevents religious associations from controlling mass media.
