What do contemporary archeologists, art collectors, and funerary directors have in common? All groups deal with cultural heritage and all of them are dominated by the “cult of the original atoms”. By this I mean the (implicit) belief that the identity of an object or person is tied to the specific atoms out of which it, she, or he was made at some point in time. As a consequence, there can only ever be one authentic Acropolis and one authentic Mona Lisa. Furthermore, given that the focus is on the preservation of the original atoms and all things decay over time, this often ends up either preserving or merely slowing the further decay of lifeless ruins and skeletons.
