I Friggin’ Hate SAND (in video games)

Creative media is the gateway and the catalyst for mankind’s wildest imagination to flourish. Its were all manner of wonder and whimsy take root as we create breathtaking worlds, outlandish characters and dramatic stories; create technology, flora and fauna not of this world that we otherwise could only dream of. When you really just sit there and appreciate it, it’s incredible the limitless potential of the human mind… which is why it’s SOO INFURIATING TO SEE FICTIONAL PLACES THAT ARE JUST SAND!!

Why. Why does the creative world feature soo many environments that are JUST SAND!? Star Wars, Minecraft, Super Mario, Mad Max, Call of Duty, Monster Hunter, Borderlands and the list goes on and on. In every genre from sci-fi to fantasy, historic adventure to post-apocalyptical future play host to worlds buried in sand. From small indie studios to Triple-A titans of the industry all have that seemingly mandatory desert level that drives me up the wall with how prevalent these boring and unappealing areas are.

I want to be clear, when I refer to “sand,” in this I refer exclusively to arid desert environments like that of the Sahara or Gobi desert. Just big empty swathes of beige-ish nothing, as far as the eye can see.
