The French Visa Passeport Talent. A Cautionary Tale.

What better adventure for a family with elementary school children than to live abroad for a year or two? For us, all the pieces seemed to fit best to go to Paris: my wife and I both speak decent French, it allows us to see relatives throughout Europe and Paris is, of course, pas mal comme ville. We could figure out how to do this for our work, the kids’ school, renting out our home in the US, etc. The only thing we needed was to get the residence permit, the carte de long séjour.

Applying for a carte de long séjour seems fairly straightforward and France offers a number of ways to qualify for one. The essential difficulty is that one may only apply for a carte de long séjour at most 90 days before one intends to arrive in France. Additionally, an application for a Passeport Talent is not guaranteed in any way. So, if a family hopes to move to France in July, as we did, one may only submit one’s papers in April.
