A Well-Tempered Fourier Analysis Continued

You make an excellent point about extending the discussion to consider how the human auditory system responds to increasing musical complexity beyond Bach’s era, as well as more radical departures from tonality in the 20th century.

With regards to increasing complexity in harmonic and melodic structures post-Baroque, I think the human ability to parse and interpret patterns played a key role. While composers pushed boundaries, they still generally worked within the bounds of familiar scales and functional tonal relationships. This allowed listeners to apply their innate pattern recognition abilities to gradually absorb new musical ideas over repeated exposure through enculturation.
