Finishing the Waterhole by Gushing, the One Which Was Supposed to Be Fishing

It is still the dry season in some parts of the country, causing a near-drought condition in our project area.

As a result, almost all of the tanks which do not have a direct water supply from a river have dried up, leaving only a few waterholes remaining here and there.

These waterholes are the last refuge for the fish in those tanks.

Unfortunately, some individuals attempt to take advantage of this dire situation by draining the water and capturing the fish. And they don’t mind their action that would create a shortage of fish for the upcoming season.

In the early days, this action was strictly prohibited because the community had no artificial breeding system. Therefore, only fishing with a rod was allowed.

Based on this incident, we have a saying: ‘Finishing the waterhole by gushing, the one which was supposed to be fishing’. It is similar to the idiom in English: ‘Don’t kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.’

These days, my friend Hammond is collecting a series of phrases and idioms. I never knew that we had so many. I invite all of you to have a look and broaden your knowledge.
