“It was the women…once they were organised they were the very devil”
<p>While their husbands and sons were fighting and dying in foreign fields, the working class women of Glasgow also went to war.</p>
<p>They didn’t seek or start this fight. They were forced to defend themselves when their profiteering landlords demanded they pay more rent or face eviction.</p>
<p>The home-made weapons they wielded were not bombs and bullets, but balls of wet washing and bags of flour. The landlords had a private army of bailiffs, political connections, and the power of the courts on their side.</p>
