My Disability Was Fetishized When I Was a Child

<p>InApril of 2022 I was diagnosed with a genetic condition. I&rsquo;d had it my whole life and no one had ever paid me enough notice to give my suffering a name. Because I was suffering. From the time I was born, this condition caused medical issues including daily pain and chronic fatigue.</p> <p>The most obvious symptoms of my condition garnered a fair bit of attention. Rather than recognize that something was off and inquire after my health or suggest I see a doctor, the symptoms of my condition were fetishized by the adults around me starting from an obscenely young age.</p> <p>I remember, when I was around five years old, I would pop both feet behind my head with my ankles crossed at the neck then walk around on my hands.
