I Survived the Feral Dogs of Hong Kong

When I lived in Hong Kong, I would sometimes hike up to The Peak, the highest point of the many hills on Hong Kong Island. It’s home to some of the swankiest residences in the territory, a holdover from colonial days when the ruling Brits would sit on their porches drinking Pimm’s Cups and mumbling “Good show, chaps” to the toiling masses below unloading opium from East India Company clippers.

Today, The Peak is a lovely place to hike, with trails that are broad, well-paved, and easy to walk. In addition, most of the houses are set well back from the paths, so you’re surrounded by the tropical greenery that’s surprisingly ubiquitous for a city as densely populated as Hong Kong.
