I Represented a 6-year-old for Her Felony Charges
<p>One of my regular gigs as a new attorney was being appointed by judges to represent people charged with crimes. Once a month, I handled a juvenile offender docket where I’d represent about a dozen different kids back to back. I was not given any information in advance. Almost every case was handled from start to finish on that day.</p>
<p>My role when a criminal defendant is a kid differs greatly from when I was appointed to represent an adult. While I still protected their rights, I was what is sometimes termed a “wise parent.” My goal, and the juvenile system’s goal, was to find appropriate remedies to turn a criminal act into a wake-up call, definitely for the kids and often for the parents.</p>
