ADFS: Active Directory Federation Services — Datatypes

AD FS is an identity access solution that offers seamless Single Sign-On (SSO) access to protected Internet-facing applications or services for client computers, whether they are within or outside your network. This access is maintained even when user accounts and applications are situated in entirely separate networks or organizations.

Typically, when an application or service resides in one network and a user account is in another, users are usually prompted for additional credentials when attempting to access the application or service. These secondary credentials validate the user’s identity within the environment where the application or service is hosted, enabling the server to make informed authorization decisions.

AD FS enables organizations to eliminate the need for these secondary credentials by establishing trust relationships, known as federation trusts, which allow organizations to extend a user’s digital identity and access rights to trusted partners. In this federated environment, each organization continues to manage its own identities, but they can also securely share and accept identities from other organizations.
