Why do I have to pretend to be fasting?

Fasting is observed for a month (Ramadan) when Muslims (followers of Islam) abstain from food, drink, and sexual relations between the hours of sunrise and sunset.

It is one of the five pillars of Islam, which becomes compulsory for Muslims as soon as they hit puberty.

The purpose is to practice self-discipline, be mindful, seek forgiveness, feel the plight of the less fortunate and give charity for the sake of Allah/God.

I must admit, it was extremely difficult at first (aged 11/12) and I felt it was a harsh demand from our creator who is the Most Gracious and Most Merciful. If I am being deprived of water, where is the mercy?

Website
