The Mind is an Evolutionary Byproduct of the Brain

Wright’s brilliant, well-written, and utterly unusual book, “The Moral Animal.” The book showed me how morals have changed and brought up some controversial issues that have political, sexual, family, office, and social consequences. Wright is trying to make the main point that morality is an adaptation that helps genetic self-interest more than anything else. He says that our gut thoughts about what is right and wrong are not valid on their own, so we shouldn’t trust them. In the wake of Darwin, morality needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.

Think about parenting. Who could ever doubt that a mother loves her children, no matter what? Wright says it comes from greedy genes that change animals to help their families. These genes are likely copies of themselves that live in their siblings. There is a way to measure maternal love. Parents are expected to care for and love each child based on how likely they will have children in the future, even though all children love and need their parents’ full attention.
