The evolution of #MeToo

After I separated from my husband, I read Unbound, a book written by Tarana Burk, a social justice activist who spent decades working with survivors of sexual violence, particularly young women of color from low-wealth communities. I wanted to honor her legacy unaware that she would unlock mine.

I am a privileged white woman, with no experience of physical violence yet Tarana’s story was the one that set me free. Specifically, the chapter where she lost control and relived the memory of her childhood trauma. The night she released the experience from her body she had what my friend Jen refers to as a “dark night of the soul”. Navigating the emotions of young Tarana was agonizing but transformed into curiosity by morning. Sun streaming through the windows, she wondered, “How different would it all be if I just had a little bit more courage?”

Visit Now
