The end of the eviction moratorium in San Francisco: what’s ahead?

<p>August 29, 2023 marked the sunset of the COVID-19 temporary tenant protections in San Francisco. Since July 2022, tenants in the city who fell behind on rent were protected against eviction on the basis of nonpayment. But rent unpaid from August 30th 2023 and on will be a cause for eviction in court.</p> <p>San Francisco and the Bay Area are one of the last places in the country with COVID-19 tenant protections. Most cities rolled their regulations back (if they had any), as the federal moratorium ended in August 2021. Since then, the country has seen a spectacular increase in evictions.&nbsp;<a href="https://evictionlab.org/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">The Eviction Lab</a>, which tracks evictions all over the country, has warned about a rise in eviction filings, with filings in some cities reaching levels higher than pre-pandemic average by 50%.
