No, Being an English Major Is Not Easy

<p>There&rsquo;s a huge difference between speaking a language and understanding things about it, like its word classes, semantics, syntax, orthography, dialects, etymology, and so on. If you know what at least two or three of those words mean, then I salute you.</p> <p>I&rsquo;ve experienced this situation a lot: I tell someone I studied English, and they go,&nbsp;<em>Wow, that must have been so easy. Isn&rsquo;t it just English?</em>&nbsp;Like English is just&nbsp;<em>that</em>&nbsp;easy. And it rankles. Every. Single. Time.
