Preparing for the biggest year of elections in history, by looking to the past

<p>I wholeheartedly count myself among that group. I care a lot about democracy, both in my own backyard and in every far-flung corner of the world. I&rsquo;ve been working on supporting democracy advocates in all kinds of places &mdash; new and old democracies, advancing and backsliding ones &mdash; for more than a decade (and began my career supporting democracy activists in the Middle East before, during and after the Arab Spring movements).</p> <p>More than half of the entire world&rsquo;s population will go to the polls in consequential elections throughout this year, including but certainly not limited to the next US presidential election this November.
