Preparing for the biggest year of elections in history, by looking to the past

I wholeheartedly count myself among that group. I care a lot about democracy, both in my own backyard and in every far-flung corner of the world. I’ve been working on supporting democracy advocates in all kinds of places — new and old democracies, advancing and backsliding ones — for more than a decade (and began my career supporting democracy activists in the Middle East before, during and after the Arab Spring movements). More than half of the entire world’s population will go to the polls in consequential elections throughout this year, including but certainly not limited to the next US presidential election this November.
