Eight Counterintuitive Lessons That Made Me a Better Leader

Leadership advice is everywhere.

Some of it is older than me, some born yesterday. Ideas that catch on and get repeated before anyone has a chance to check if it’s right.

Maybe it sounds clever. Or logical. Or it’s just been done that way for so long, everyone stopped checking if it was still effective.

But a good leader eats dogma for breakfast.

After over fifteen years in and around leadership roles, I’ve learned from experience that some things are the opposite of what you’d expect.

Here are some of my favourites.

#1. Impostor Syndrome Is A Gift

That little whisper in your ear is probably responsible for a lot of your growth.

It’s by raging against this voice of insecurity that we can level up and unleash the beast within.

We are like a fire. We consume the obstacles placed on top of us, if we choose to.

Impostor syndrome is you checking you’re qualified for the responsibility you have. A level of conviction before competence could leave you vulnerable to arrogance. But keeping yourself in check, so long as you don’t let it go too far, is a blessing.
