What my dermatologist never told me about eczema — And how vaping was making it worse.

In my early 20’s, I woke up one morning with small little bumps on each of my fingertips around the nails. They weren’t red, they didn’t itch; no discernible bug bites. An internet search brought me to a diagnosis of eczema. A few days later, it went away.

I didn’t know at the time that this would be the most pleasant interaction with this disorder — eczema introduced itself very politely - then periodically terrorized me for the next decade.

I had a few minor battles with eczema that came and went with no definitive trigger, until a few years later when I attempted to stop smoking. I purchased my first vape — one of those big metal cloud-beasts. Debates about the health benefits of vaping vs smoking aside (not the point of this post), for a while, I thought I had kicked smoking for good and I had found a healthier alternative.
