<p>A multitude is contained in the plant kingdom weaving its roots through the very fabric of our existence. As plant-based eaters, the importance of plants in our lives cannot be overstated. Plants are our fuel. If we look beyond simply food, we see the many ways plants enrich and improve our lives. Consider this article an ode to plants and all that they are to us.</p>
<p>Economic Botany is the study of how people interact with plants. It’s an interdisciplinary domain encompassing anthropology, biology, geography, economics, and archaeology. It is a field with its own methods and literature and bridges the gap between pure and applied botany to reveal the uses and capacity of plants. There are organisations and institutions such as the Royal Botanic Gardens in London, the Botany & Plant Biotechnology Department at the University of Johannesburg, Chicago’s Field Museum and the Tropical Botany and Ethnobiology Lab at the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague among many others that contribute to this domain, shedding light on the manifold uses and potentials of plants through research, nature conservation and archiving.</p>
