The Silent Conversation of Diversity

I believe our outer shell is our Earthly avatar. When we’re born, we are born with innocent eyes. We do not see the colour of people or their genders or their weird hairstyles. We just see our friends.

As we grow older, we are taught to be judgemental, to be biased, even if you don’t believe you were taught this, you were. Society teaches this through social conditioning. I am not immune to this phenomenon. I live my day-to-day life as a mixed-race, half-black, half-white woman in the tech sector.
There is never a day where I wake up, look in the mirror and think “Hey, I’m half-black”. I also do not subscribe to the ‘one-drop theory’; the train of thought that says “If you have one drop of black in you, then you are black”, sorry Halle Barry, I beg to disagree. I see myself as a mixed-race person but more than that, I see myself as a human being and I aim to always see others in that way too despite the scientific realities of our society. We really do have a long way to go.
