David Hall — A Dutch Wonder

In 1663, the Dutch captured Cochin from the Portuguese. In 1670, Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede tot Drakenstein was appointed the governor of Dutch Malabar. He gathered a collection of plants in the company garden and, with the help of local and foreign physicians, professors of medicine and botany and illustrators, compiled the Hortus Malabaricus. It is a comprehensive volume on the medicinal properties of the flora of Malabar.

The Dutch were interested in trade and demolished the Portuguese structures around Cochin. The Dutch East India Company built three houses sometime between the late 1670s and 1690s using the material from demolished churches, one of which is David Hall.
