Why Did We Used to Water Down Wine?
<p>Wine has a long and storied history being one of the oldest and most popular drinks in the world, in 4th place after water, tea, and coffee, just ahead of beer. Wine features prominently in all three Abrahamic faiths, but it was no less important to the Ancient Greeks and the Romans, the latter indulging in the infamous Bacchanalia.</p>
<p>Surprisingly though, few drank their wine neat, which was called <em>merum</em>. It was typically diluted, rendering the resulting drink between four and six part water to one part wine. But why? Today ‘watering down the wine’, or any alcoholic drink for that matter, is considered cheap at best, and tantamount to theft at worst. What caused the decline of this ancient practice?</p>
