Doppler Shift: What Is It?

Now, I am going to assume that 95% of the people who are reading this are not astronomy geeks. I bet that 30% of the people reading this are also not experts in optics. Am I right ? So, for the sake of those 95% and 30% people, let me start from the basics.

What is a spectrum of light?

When light passes through a glass prism, or any similar refracting surface, it splits into its constituent colours (Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo & violet). This is called the spectrum of light. In a spectrum of light, the red colour has the highest wavelength & lowest frequency, and the violet colour has the lowest wavelength & the highest frequency.

Website
