Microsoft | CEO Admits Discontinuing Windows Phone was a Mistake

Nadella’s admission is the latest in a series of regrets from Microsoft executives about the company’s failure in the mobile market. In 2013, former CEO Steve Ballmer said that it was a “missed opportunity” for Microsoft, and in 2019, co-founder Bill Gates called it his “greatest mistake ever.”

Here is a quote from Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft:

“The decision I think a lot of people talk about — and one of the most difficult decisions I made when I became CEO — was our exit of what I’ll call the mobile phone as defined then. In retrospect, I think there could have been ways we could have made it work by perhaps reinventing the category of computing between PCs, tablets, and phones.”

Windows Phone was launched in 2010, but it failed to gain significant market share in the face of competition from iOS and Android. The company discontinued development of the platform in 2017.

Nadella said that Microsoft’s biggest mistake was not focusing on mobile early enough. He also said that the company made some bad decisions about app development and marketing.
