An Extinction Event — Dino Crisis

Twelve days ago Dino Crisis 3 celebrated its 20th birthday.

If you’ve forgotten about it, I can’t say that I blame you. The game was a radical departure from earlier entries, so much so that it could have been from an entirely different series. This, coupled with the daft decision to release the title exclusively on Xbox, which had by that time only sold 9.4mn units and had no prior history with the franchise, resulted in a game that performed sharply below forecast.

Apparently, Capcom is still trying to forget about the game as well but sadly that has come at the expense of the entire franchise, which is regrettable considering that the earlier games are classics. This is made worse by the series’ wealth of unrealized potential and Capcom’s fixation on its more successful and established cornerstone brands.

To date, the series has sold some 4.4mn units. Dino Crisis 1 accounts for 2.4mn units, while Dino Crisis 2 stands at 1.2mn units, leaving an 800k units unaccounted for. Capcom projected Dino Crisis 3 to sell 520k units by FY04, but it failed to meet that milestone. Considering that Dino Crisis 3 never earned Capcom’s “platinum title” designation, we know it never sold 1mn units and can presume that the remaining 800k units can be divided between it and Dino Stalker — with Dino Crisis 3 likely accounting for the lion’s share.
