Can Certainty in Digital Forensics Be Automated?

Our previous article in this series reported that the more conclusive the evidence (and the more confident the expert testifying to it), the better for jurors’ decision making. Probabilistic reporting, introduced to forensic science by DNA analysis, has proven particularly effective.

In part, this reporting is aided by software, which can help perform the calculation. So the question is: given the trend towards automation in digital forensics software, could it also calculate probability? If not, what would it take to get there?
