The Fight for Our Democracy is Over

They say that American kids need to learn more about civics. I agree. I used to teach fifth grade, and we covered a lot of information about politics and political systems. We learned a lot about democracy, from the early Greeks to the formation of our Republic.

My students could tell you that the word “democracy” means “rule by the people.” It comes from the Greek words “demos” (the citizens) and “kratos” (rule). They could tell you that a democratic government is based upon certain key principles. Some of them include the opportunity for the citizens to choose their leaders, that free and open elections are necessary for democracy to exist, and that the powers of the government are derived from the consent of the governed.
