Rape and Sexual Assault Have Effectively Been Decriminalised
<p>The seemingly intractable issue of not only the high prevalence of rape and sexual assault but the failure of the criminal justice system to convict rapists is not new. Academics, legal experts and charities have been highlighting this issue for decades — but if anything the problem has only gotten worse.</p>
<p>In 2020, the <a href="https://rcew.fra1.cdn.digitaloceanspaces.com/media/documents/c-decriminalisation-of-rape-report-cwj-evaw-imkaan-rcew-nov-2020.pdf" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">chance</a> of a report of rape leading to the police charging a suspect was only 1 in 70; the figure for 2021 is 1 in 100, according to <a href="https://rapecrisis.org.uk/get-informed/statistics-sexual-violence/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">Rape Crisis</a> England and Wales. To reiterate, that’s the chance of an alleged rapist <em>being charged</em>. Not the chance they will receive a conviction, or even face court, but the chance the police will actually follow through on a report of rape and charge a suspect.</p>
