Dear Suitcase: I Don’t Want to Get on the Road Again

Below is a January 10, 2010 post I published on Theme for Great Cities, my old blog where I documented nearly a decade of my expat adventures and musings (from 2008 to 2017). I wrote this one three years and four months after leaving New York City and moving to Buenos Aires, where I’d remain based for another 13 months or so. I had recently sold my NYC apartment and was about to return there for only the second time since leaving the United States.

This would end up being a pivotal year in my life. That autumn, I’d visit Australia for the first time (it would become my next home base in March of 2011) and meet the man who would become my husband six years later. As I revisited this post more than 12 years after I wrote it, I realized how different my life might have been if I had decided definitively that staying permanently put was preferable to packing and unpacking.
