How Silent But Deadly Racism Harms Air Quality in Black Communities
<p>When Black Americans say racism is everywhere in this country, even in the air we breathe, we’re not just whistling Dixie. There is a relationship between the air quality and the racial makeup of communities. To understand why, we must consider the historical factors that brought us to this point. Generations of racial redlining and prejudicial lending practices have <a href="https://time.com/6074243/segregation-america-increasing/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">maintained</a> racially-segregated neighborhoods throughout the country. This segregation allowed companies to target black communities, specifically, allowing them to turn a profit while diminishing the health, wellness, and longevity of those living there. In this way, racism operates as an invisible yet powerful wind, blowing over black communities, poisoning the air they breathe, and their communities without ever uttering a word.</p>
