How Higher Temperatures Can Drive Eye Damage in Seniors
<p>Rising temperatures carry a number of health risks. It’s harder to exercise in hot weather, and excessive heat poses risks to everyone from children to pets. And new research suggests that heat may also hurt senior citizens by damaging eyesight.</p>
<p>In a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37338863/" rel="noopener ugc nofollow" target="_blank">June 2023 paper</a> from the Journal of Ophthalmic Epidemiology (eye diseases), researchers from the University of Toronto looked at the distribution of U.S. senior citizens with eye problems, mapped against the average temperature in their home county.</p>
<p>They found that, regardless of age, sex, race, income, or education, Americans who lived in warmer areas were more likely to suffer from severe vision impairment.</p>
