Liberal Arts Blog — “Good King Wenceslaus” — US Army Band, Bing Crosby, the Beatles

This week I decided to learn a little more about a carol that was not one that I had grown up with. It does however appear prominently in one of my favorite Christmas films, “Love Actually.” And it is really a big deal in both England and the Czech Republic, where Wenceslaus Square is one of Prague’s most historic landmarks. Who was King Wenceslaus? What are the origins of the melody? The lyrics? What are the most memorable recordings? What does King Wenceslaus have to do with St. Stephen? As always, a few wonderful surprises. Like the Beatles doing three versions of it in their Christmas messages to fans in 1963.
