The Criminal’s Dilemma: How Your Style Choices Can Plant Seeds of Doubt
<p>Asa lecturer, I’m always interested when students explore unique angles on societal issues through their projects. One student’s recent assignment on designing personal protective equipment for women traveling alone piqued my curiosity about what drives people, especially criminals, to target and commit crimes against others — particularly women in isolated situations. Intrigued to learn more, I decided to investigate the underlying factors behind this troubling phenomenon.</p>
<p>One overarching theme became clear: Criminals actively size up potential victims, seeking out those who appear vulnerable, distracted, affluent, or easily overpowered with minimal risk of retaliation. While we can’t control a criminal’s motivations, we may be able to influence their perceptions and decision-making through strategic choices about our personal appearance and belongings we carry.</p>
