A Beginners Guide To The Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC)

Recently I have been working on a lot of projects which require measuring how “similar” two sets of data are to one another. There are many statistical models for measuring correlation but the ICC is ideal for scenarios where you want to quantitatively assess the reproducibility of instruments or observers that are measuring or evaluating the same dataset.

The ICC score is incredibly useful but also difficult to understand. There are many “types” of ICC scores and knowing which one to use can be tricky. I found this paper by Koo and Li to be an excellent guide and have based this article on its content. Additionally, I have tried to include as many relevant examples as possible to help readers best understand ICC and how to use it properly.
